Senior Crime Intelligence officer, Maj-Gen. Feroz Khan and Gauteng Hawks head Ebrahim Kadwa, are expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday following their arrests over the weekend in connection with alleged illegal precious metals dealings. The two senior police officials will appear alongside a civilian who was also arrested for the unlawful possession of precious metals.

According to the South African Police Service, the arrests followed an investigation into alleged illicit precious metals transactions, corruption and related offences. The arrests were effected over the weekend by the team who executed a J50 warrant of arrest.

Precious Metals Scandal: Background

Kadwa was arrested on Saturday, while Khan was taken into custody on Sunday after law enforcement officers raided his apartment in Houghton, Johannesburg. The arrests placed renewed attention on long-standing allegations against Khan, who has previously been accused of political interference and corruption.

During testimony before the Madlanga Commission and Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee, KZN Police Commissioner Lt-Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi described Khan as a “political fixer” who allegedly received protection from senior politicians. Mkhwanazi also claimed former police minister Bheki Cele pressured him in 2021 to shield Khan during investigations linked to a major drug bust.

Allegations Against Khan

Khan was previously accused of defeating the ends of justice and bringing the SAPS into disrepute after allegedly interfering in the investigation when officers reportedly attempted to steal seized narcotics. The allegations against Khan and Kadwa have sparked serious concerns over corruption within the SAPS leadership.
