Motorists travelling along the N3 Toll Route between KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State have been urged to exercise extreme caution after potentially damaging wind speeds exceeding 100km/h were recorded on Van Reenen Pass on Monday afternoon.
According to a statement issued by the South African National Roads Agency, the strong winds were measured from around 5pm, prompting authorities to implement traffic control measures along the pass between Ladysmith and Harrismith.
N3 Toll Concession Warning
Law enforcement officials have been deployed to manage traffic and assist in ensuring the safety of road users as severe weather conditions continue to affect the route. N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) said the changing weather and strong winds were placing additional strain on drivers, particularly those operating heavy vehicles.
Thania Dhoogra, chief operating officer of N3TC, advised motorists to reduce speed, heed warnings and follow official instructions. Extra caution is required by all drivers on the N3 Toll Route tonight and tomorrow as the SA Weather Service has advised that these conditions are likely to continue into tomorrow.

Motorists have been encouraged to monitor real-time traffic updates via the N3 Route social media platforms and to make use of the N3 Helpline for emergencies or assistance. The 24-hour helpline can be reached on 0800 63 43 57 for incidents along the N3 Toll Route between Cedara and Heidelberg.
