Rhameez Jansen, a former homeless barber, has been giving back to his community by providing free haircuts to those in need on the streets of Cape Town. Since October last year, he has cut the hair of over 530 people, with the goal of reaching 1,000 soon. Jansen’s initiative is not only about providing a much-needed service but also about restoring dignity to those who have been struggling on the streets.
Having experienced homelessness himself for about 12 years, Jansen knows firsthand the challenges that come with living on the streets. He worked with Streetscapes, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending homelessness, for over seven years and has been sober throughout that time. Jansen’s journey to recovery was not easy, but with the help of his mentor, he was able to stay on track and find a new purpose in life.
Restoring Dignity One Haircut at a Time
Jansen’s mentor gave him the idea of cutting people’s hair for free, and together they raised funds to buy the necessary equipment. He has a uniform, a board with a QR code that passersby can use to donate, and a small fold-up chair. Jansen has seen the impact that a simple haircut can have on a person’s life. He recalls how some of his clients have gone on to secure job interviews and even found employment after receiving a haircut from him.
According to Jansen, people living on the streets often prioritize their basic needs, such as food and shelter, over personal grooming. However, a haircut can give them the confidence to take the next step and seek out new opportunities. Jansen’s clients have reported feeling more confident and dignified after receiving a haircut, and some have even gone on to obtain their identity documents and seek out job opportunities.
The Impact of Jansen’s Initiative
Jansen’s initiative has not only improved the lives of his clients but also brought attention to the issue of homelessness in Cape Town. His story has inspired others to get involved and make a difference in their community. As Jansen continues to work towards his goal of cutting the hair of 1,000 people, he hopes to start a community that will help make life easier for those living on the streets.
Some of the benefits of Jansen’s initiative include:
- Restoring dignity and confidence to those in need
- Providing a much-needed service to those who cannot afford it

Jansen’s story is a testament to the power of kindness and compassion. By providing free haircuts to those in need, he is not only improving their lives but also bringing hope and dignity to those who have been struggling on the streets.
