Grimaldi’s, located at the Durban Country Club, is a smart modern restaurant that offers a wide range of Italian dishes. The service is very good, and the atmosphere is perfect for a mid-week dinner or a special occasion. The restaurant is open from Monday to Saturday, noon to 10pm, and Sunday, noon to 5pm.
The menu includes a variety of starters, such as mixed marinated olives, chicken livers in a piquant peri-peri sauce, and halloumi served with homemade onion chutney. One of the highlights is the snails Gorgonzola, which is a must-try. The rolled pork belly with wholegrain mustard, topped with an orange and honey jus, and garnished with baked apple, is also a standout dish.
Italian Cuisine at Its Best
I opted for the baby marrow carpaccio, which was delicate slices of baby marrow drizzled with chilli olive oil and dusted with Danish feta and Parmesan cheese. Unfortunately, the dish was on the bland side, and the chilli oil was not evident. However, with a heavy cracking of black pepper and a good glug of olive oil, it tasted much better. The Glass Guy tried the crab soup, which had a deeper flavor with a good hint of chilli in the tomato base.
According to the Italian cuisine tradition, a good meal should include a variety of dishes, such as antipasto, primo, and secondo. Grimaldi’s menu includes all these options, with a substantial selection of pastas, pizzas, and main courses. The fish menu is also impressive, with everything from beer-battered fish and chips to a fancy line fish topped with prawns in Thermidor sauce.
