Carlo Petrini Dies: Slow Food Founder's Legacy Lives On

Carlo Petrini, the founder of the Slow Food movement, has passed away at the age of 76. Petrini, an Italian journalist and writer, founded Slow Food in 1986 in protest against the opening of the first fast food restaurants in Italy. Since then, the movement has grown to promote quality traditional cooking and sustainable farming in 160 countries.

According to the Slow Food website, Petrini died on Thursday evening at his home in the town of Bra in his native Piedmont. The movement hailed him as a “visionary” who “brought to life a global movement rooted in the values of good, clean and fair food for all, connecting communities, farmers, food artisans, cooks, activists and young people across the world”.

Slow Food Movement’s Impact

The Slow Food movement has had a significant impact on the way people think about food and the environment. As Petrini once said, “The most important work Slow Food has done is to restore the concept of gastronomy to its holistic, multidisciplinary form. The idea of gastronomy as merely recipes and Michelin stars is a very limited one.”

In a statement, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Petrini was “ahead of his time”. She added that he was “among the first to promote the concept of food sovereignty and defend the right to quality food for everyone, enhancing the link between identity, territory and traditions”.

Legacy of Carlo Petrini

Besides his work with Slow Food, Petrini founded the international Terra Madre network for sustainable agriculture and the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo. His legacy will continue to inspire people to think about the impact of their food choices on the environment and local communities.

Some of the key principles of the Slow Food movement include:

  • Promoting quality traditional cooking and sustainable farming
  • Defending biodiversity and promoting a healthy food model
  • Respecting the environment and local cultures

As the world mourns the loss of Carlo Petrini, his vision for a more sustainable and equitable food system will continue to inspire people around the world.
