Sassa Denies 1Life Funeral Cover Partnership

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has expressed serious concerns about the alleged misuse of its logo by 1Life Insurance, after promotional material surfaced suggesting an official partnership between the two organisations.

Sassa said it “strongly distances itself from this and categorically states that the agency is not in partnership with 1Life Insurance to provide funeral cover.” The agency emphasised that it “does not, at any point, work with insurance companies or funeral schemes,” making clear that any suggestion otherwise is misleading to the public.

Why the Denial Matters

Sassa also cautioned insurance companies and funeral schemes against the unlawful use of its logo, warning that the agency will not tolerate misrepresentation of its brand. According to the South African Social Security Agency website, the agency is responsible for administering various social grants, including the Old Age Grant and the Disability Grant.

Responding to Sassa’s concerns, 1Life Insurance acknowledged the agency’s public statement and said it takes “any concerns relating to the use of its brand or logo seriously.” The company stressed that it “does not use the Sassa logo in its approved promotional material, nor does it market any product as being in partnership with Sassa.”

Investigation and Next Steps

Addressing the image that sparked the controversy, 1Life confirmed that it “is not authentic 1Life Insurance promotional material and does not form part of any campaign or communication approved by 1Life.” The company added that all partners must adhere strictly to its brand standards and assured the public that it would investigate the matter further.

The following are some key points to note about the controversy:

  • Sassa has denied any connection to 1Life Insurance or any other insurance company.
  • The agency has warned the public to be cautious of fraudulent services that may misuse its logo or name.
  • 1Life Insurance has acknowledged Sassa’s concerns and has committed to investigating the matter.
