R5m Drug Bust at OR Tambo Airport: 5 Women Arrested

A major drug bust took place at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Saturday, resulting in the arrest of five South African women. The women were allegedly found to be carrying drugs worth over R5 million, according to the police.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk stated that preliminary reports indicate the women were en route to China via Dubai. A search led to the discovery of drugs concealed inside their sneakers, underwear, and private parts.

Drug Trafficking Charges

The suspects are expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges related to drug trafficking. This incident is the latest in a series of high-profile drug busts at the airport, including the arrest of a Brazilian man in May who was found with R1.4 million of cocaine strapped to his legs.

Previous Drug Busts

In July, a 25-year-old Brazilian woman was arrested at OR Tambo airport with R4.2 million worth of cocaine hidden in her luggage. These incidents highlight the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat drug trafficking in South Africa. According to the South African Police Service, drug trafficking is a serious concern that requires cooperation from the public and law enforcement agencies.

To combat drug trafficking, the police use various methods, including:

  • Intelligence gathering and sharing
  • Border control and surveillance
  • Collaboration with international law enforcement agencies

As the police continue to crack down on drug trafficking, it is essential for the public to report any suspicious activity to the authorities. By working together, we can help reduce the incidence of drug-related crimes in South Africa.
