South African parents have been asked to return nearly 3,000 units of baby formula due to concerns over a heat-resistant toxin called cereulide. The recall affects Nutricia Aptamil Nutribiotik 2 and Nutricia Aptajunior Nutribiotik 3, which were sold at Dis-Chem and Clicks since August 2025.
The National Consumer Commission announced the recall on Friday, stating that the products may contain cereulide, which can cause symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. The commission said that 2,989 units must be returned, and that the products were also exported to Botswana and Namibia.
Baby Formula Toxin Fears
This is not the first time that baby formula has been recalled in South Africa due to toxin fears. In January, Nestlé recalled a batch of its NAN Special Pro baby formula from South Africa’s shelves as part of a global recall. The recall was due to a quality issue in an ingredient sourced from one of its major suppliers.
The latest recall comes after French food giant Danone, which owns Nutricia, announced in Paris that it would withdraw some of the affected products. In countries like the UK, products were recalled a month ago.
