Archbishop Thabo Makgoba of the Anglican Church delivered a scathing Easter sermon at St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town, tackling the growth of online gambling and corruption among police leaders. Makgoba urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to take action against these issues, which are plaguing the country.

The Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town expressed concern over the challenges posed by corruption among police leaders, conflicts in the Middle East, Ukraine, and Sudan, and the devastating effects of these conflicts on the global economy. He noted that the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East are having a significant impact on South Africa, with escalating petrol and diesel prices threatening to lead to rationing, speed restrictions, and higher food prices.

Corruption and Violence

Makgoba condemned the high levels of corruption and violence in the country, citing the frequent assassinations of whistle-blowers, witnesses, and lawyers. He also expressed concern over the gang violence and domestic violence that are stalking households in Cape Town. The Archbishop criticized the police service’s leadership, saying that it is clear that the public cannot rely on them to end the violence and criminality that has percolated to the top of society.

Online Gambling

Makgoba also criticized online gambling, describing it as an ‘evil’ that is not getting enough attention. He noted that online gambling is easily accessible and is ruining people’s lives. According to a recent discussion paper on online and interactive gambling by the National Treasury, annual betting revenue in South Africa is a significant concern.

Some of the key issues related to online gambling include:

  • Easy accessibility
  • Lack of regulation
  • High risk of addiction
  • Devastating effects on individuals and families

Makgoba’s sermon served as a call to action, urging South Africans to come together to address these issues and create a better future for the country. As the country navigates a world filled with destruction and fear, it is essential to celebrate those officers in police stations across the country who do serve the public with dedication and empathy.
