The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Public Works and Infrastructure has made significant strides in resolving stalled projects, with the northern region emerging as the best-performing area. According to MEC Martin Meyer, the region has reduced its number of delayed projects from 63 to fewer than 16, a decline of over 75%.
This turnaround was revealed during a recent meeting between Meyer and department officials, where they discussed strategies to prioritise key projects, including the Grey’s Hospital project. The meeting also allowed Meyer to be updated on a broader view of the department’s project delivery trajectory, including challenges, targets, and solutions.
Key Projects Receive Priority Attention
The Grey’s Hospital project is among those receiving the highest priority, with the Infrastructure Management and Technical Support directorate, led by chief director Nokwanda Gcaba, focusing on project planning to ensure the project brief is followed until completion. Other problematic projects, such as the Woodlands Primary School in the Midlands region, are also receiving attention, with 37 bids received and a plan to have a contractor back on site by May.
Challenges and Solutions
MEC Meyer explained that the reduction in stalled projects is the result of intervention, noting that some things take time to resolve. For instance, if a contractor has left the site, it takes time to either get the contractor back and reinstated, or it has to go back out to tender. The remaining projects have their own challenges, but they are close to being resolved.
According to Meyer, the appointment of a new regional director, Mr Mahaye, has been instrumental in turning the northern region around. The region, which includes the King Cetshwayo, Zululand, and uMkhanyakude districts, was once one of the department’s most problematic regions, but has now become one of the best-performing.
