A 38-year-old man, believed to be an extortionist, was shot multiple times at the Khayelitsha taxi rank in Delft South, Cape Town, on Friday afternoon, raising concerns about extortion-related violence in the area.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred around 1:45 pm on Main Road when unidentified gunmen opened fire on the victim, who was shot in the head and face. The victim was transported to a medical facility for treatment, and police have registered a case of attempted murder for investigation.
Extortion-Related Violence on the Rise
The incident has sparked concerns about the rising cases of extortion-related violence in the area. South African Police Service spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala confirmed that the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, and the motive for the attack is not yet known.
Codeta chairperson Nceba Enge stated that sometimes incidents like these are not taxi-related but rather isolated incidents, such as extortionists. Enge explained that the police need to investigate to determine exactly what happened.
Reaction from Taxi Associations
Spokespersons for CATA (Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association) and Codeta (Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association) confirmed that they are not aware of any of their members being involved in the incident. A list of possible factors contributing to the rise in extortion-related violence includes:

- Increased competition among taxi operators
