A 21-year-old suspect believed to be a member of the Junior Mafias gang has been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting in Heideveld, Cape Town, on Sunday. The incident occurred at around 7:30pm in Rosa Court, where a 33-year-old man was killed and three others were wounded.
According to Brigadier Jayce Naidoo, station commander of the Manenberg SAPS, the arrest was made as part of a proactive strike against gang-related violence. Naidoo said that the Manenberg Crime Prevention Unit was conducting stop and searches in the area when they approached a suspicious person in Goudini Street, Heideveld.
Gang-Related Violence on the Rise
The suspect, who is facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, was found to be in possession of a .38 revolver loaded with six rounds. The firearm has been sent for ballistic testing, according to the South African Police Service website.
The incident is believed to have been a hit on a rival gangster, and the suspect is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates Court once formally charged. The Cape Town community has been plagued by gang-related violence in recent years, with many calling for increased police presence and community engagement to address the issue.
