The South African Police Service (SAPS), in collaboration with Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), has made significant strides in combating drug trafficking at OR Tambo International Airport, with the arrest of four drug mules over the past three days.
On Monday, SAPS members deployed at the airport acted on information regarding suspected drug traffickers allegedly planning to travel to Frankfurt and London via Doha. This led to the interception of a 66-year-old Somali national who was reportedly in possession of a Netherlands passport. A search of the suspect’s luggage resulted in the discovery of 55 kilograms of khat, with an estimated street value of more than R100,000.
On the same day, police discovered abandoned luggage at the airport containing approximately 45 kilograms of khat, worth over R90,000. In a separate incident on April 25, 2026, a multidisciplinary team operationalised intelligence, resulting in the arrest of a 33-year-old South African female suspect who was reportedly on her way to Hong Kong.
Further investigation led to the discovery of drugs worth more than R500 000, suspected to be cocaine and crystal methamphetamine, concealed inside her luggage. The South African Police Service has confirmed that all suspects are expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court this week on charges related to drug trafficking.
Drug Trafficking on the Rise
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, drug trafficking is a significant concern globally, with millions of people affected by the illicit drug trade. The recent arrests at OR Tambo International Airport highlight the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders in combating this scourge.
Efforts to Combat Drug Trafficking
The South African government has implemented various measures to combat drug trafficking, including the establishment of the Government Communication and Information System to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. Additionally, the SAPS has increased its presence at airports and border crossings to prevent the smuggling of illicit substances.
Some of the ways to prevent drug trafficking include:
- Increasing awareness about the dangers of drug abuse
- Improving collaboration between law enforcement agencies
- Enhancing security measures at airports and border crossings
- Providing support to individuals affected by drug addiction
The recent arrests at OR Tambo International Airport demonstrate the effectiveness of these efforts and highlight the need for continued vigilance in combating drug trafficking.
