Hazelmere Dam Tragedy: Birthday Celebration Turns Fatal for Umhlanga Businessman

A 54-year-old Umhlanga businessman is presumed drowned after a tragic incident at Hazelmere Dam on Friday. The man, who was celebrating his birthday with friends, attempted to swim to a jet-ski that had been blown away by strong winds.

According to Prem Balram of the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the search operation was initiated by the RUSA helicopter, with metro police and SAPS joining in. Witnesses reported that the man went underwater and did not resurface, prompting a massive search and rescue effort.

Search Operation Suspended Due to Bad Weather

The search operation was eventually suspended due to heavy winds, rain, and poor visibility. Balram stated that the search would resume on Saturday morning, weather permitting. The incident has raised concerns about water safety and the importance of being cautious during outdoor activities.
