A daring robbery unfolded at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, as a group of heavily armed suspects targeted Premjis Jewellers and Swarovski, leaving one armed response officer injured and sparking a massive manhunt.
According to South African Police Service protocols, the suspects allegedly used explosives to gain entry into the heavily secured store, making off with an undisclosed amount of valuables.
Robbery and Shootout
As the suspects attempted to flee, they opened fire with rifles on an armed response officer from a private security company who was entering the mall in response to the incident. The officer was shot during the exchange of gunfire, and Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) was immediately dispatched to the scene.
RUSA’s call centre was inundated with calls from frantic shoppers requesting assistance after reports of gunshots being fired. Shoppers sought refuge inside nearby businesses as the incident unfolded, and reaction officers are currently searching for the armed suspects.
Investigation Underway
The National Prosecuting Authority will likely be involved in the investigation, which is still in its early stages. The motives behind the robbery and the identities of the suspects are yet to be determined.
Some of the key questions surrounding the incident include:
- How did the suspects manage to gain entry into the heavily secured store?
- What was the extent of the damage caused by the explosives?
- How many suspects were involved in the robbery?
As the investigation continues, more information is expected to come to light. For now, the people of Durban are left to wonder how such a brazen robbery could have occurred in a busy shopping mall.
