Gun Free South Africa has warned that the incident exposes a growing normalisation of firearms in social spaces, despite the country’s ongoing gun violence crisis. According to Gun Free South Africa spokesperson Stanley Maphosa, the incident reveals a troubling reality where firearms are seen as symbols of safety, power, and status, rather than instruments designed to kill and inflict harm.
Firearm Safety Awareness
Maphosa stated that the casual display of weapons for amusement and online attention reflects a dangerous erosion of public safety awareness. He warned that the incident challenges the commonly used argument that responsible gun ownership alone is enough to prevent firearm-related harm, as people can make mistakes, act emotionally, and become negligent.
The incident comes amid growing national scrutiny over the public display and reckless use of firearms involving politicians and public figures. For example, Bitou Municipality Deputy Executive Mayor Nokuzola “Noksi” Kolwapi was criminally charged after a viral video allegedly showed her firing multiple shots into the air during a celebration in KwaNokuthula, with charges relating to alleged contraventions of the Firearms Control Act and the negligent handling and discharging of a firearm in a public place.
