Durban flood victims are finally receiving the keys to their new homes, four years after the devastating 2022 floods. The KZN Department of Human Settlements and eThekwini Municipality handed over 113 houses in Cornubia this week, bringing relief and joy to families who have been living in transitional accommodation.
Ntombi Shabane, 60, is one of the beneficiaries. She lived in Welbedacht East when her house was flooded and her family was forced to live in a community hall for eight months before being moved to flats in Reservoir Hills, where they lived for three years. Shabane expressed her gratitude and relief, saying she was happy to finally have a proper home for her children and grandchildren.
Durban Flood Relief Efforts
The 2022 floods were one of the worst disasters to hit Durban, with thousands of people displaced and many homes destroyed. The government released funds for disaster relief, but the process of rebuilding and providing new homes has been slow. According to the South African Government website, the Department of Human Settlements has been working to provide housing for those affected by the floods.
Mthokozisi Shangase, 53, is another beneficiary who has been waiting patiently since 2022. He said that living in transitional accommodation was not easy, especially when sharing a house with strangers. However, he is thankful to have a new home now, where he can live with his partner.
Challenges of Transitional Accommodation
Living in transitional accommodation can be challenging, especially for families with children. Noloyiso Mafanya, 45, said that receiving her own home filled her with joy. She will live with her children, brother, and sister in her new home. The challenges of living in close quarters with strangers can be overwhelming, but the new homes provide a sense of relief and normalcy.
Some of the challenges of transitional accommodation include:
- Overcrowding and lack of privacy
- Sharing facilities with strangers
- Limited access to basic amenities
- Emotional and psychological stress
The new homes provided by the KZN Department of Human Settlements and eThekwini Municipality are a welcome relief for the flood victims. As they start their new lives in their permanent homes, they can finally begin to rebuild and recover from the devastating effects of the 2022 floods.
