A wave of gun violence has swept through Elsies River, leaving one woman dead and four others injured in two separate incidents on Tuesday. The community is reeling as gang violence continues to plague the area, with many calling for increased police presence and action to curb the bloodshed.

According to police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala, a 39-year-old woman was fatally shot during a motor vehicle shootout at the corner of Epping Avenue and Norwood Road. The incident occurred around 1:45pm when a blue Polo GTI and a red Polo GTI were chasing each other, with the victim caught in the crossfire and sustaining two gunshot wounds to the chest.

Gang Violence on the Rise

The suspects fled the scene in the two Polo GTIs, and no arrests have been made yet. Just hours later, four people were shot and injured in Icarus Street, Eureka Estate, when an unknown suspect opened fire on the victims. The victims, including two adult males, one adult female, and a 15-year-old male, were walking on the street when the shooting occurred.

Imraahn Mukaddam, spokesperson for the Elsies River Safety Initiative and CEO of Inspire Network, emphasized the need for community solidarity and resilience to combat the gang violence. He stated that the lack of a designated and dedicated Station Commander and functioning Sector Commanders at Elsies River SAPS has contributed to the disarray of community structures.

Community Response

Mukaddam called on the community to stand together and send a clear message to the gangsters and killers that they will no longer be tolerated. He also highlighted the importance of having a well-structured and functioning community policing forum, which can be achieved by getting the station and sector commanders right.

Some of the key measures that can be taken to address the gang violence in Elsies River include:

  • Increasing police presence and patrols in high-crime areas
  • Implementing community-based initiatives to prevent gang recruitment and provide alternative opportunities for youth
  • Establishing a functional and dedicated community policing forum
  • Providing support and resources to victims of gang violence and their families
