Francois Janse van Rensburg, a 63-year-old Somerset West resident, has embarked on a remarkable 1,500km journey from Windhoek in Namibia to Somerset West to support the Somerset West Family and Night Shelter. The campaign, titled ‘Walk the Talk’, aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by those without a stable income or housing.
Janse van Rensburg began his journey on April 25 and is expected to complete it in 40 days, with his arrival in Somerset West planned for June 6. He is accompanied by his wife, Mariana, who follows in a support vehicle. The couple’s efforts are motivated by a sense of gratitude, and they hope to encourage the public to appreciate what they have and support those in need.
The Somerset West Family and Night Shelter
The shelter has been operating for 38 years and provides temporary housing, meals, early childhood care, school support, and programmes to help residents become self-sufficient. It runs two facilities on Church Street, one for single adults and the other for families with children. According to the Western Cape Government, such shelters play a vital role in supporting vulnerable communities.
Janse van Rensburg’s campaign aims to find 1,522 donors, one for every kilometre he walks, to contribute to the shelter’s operations and planned growth. This is not his first long-distance fundraising effort, as he completed an 832km walk from Strand to Gqeberha last year in support of the same organisation.
Supporting the Campaign
As of May 4, Janse van Rensburg had already completed 345km of his journey. The public can support the campaign by visiting the shelter’s Facebook page for updates and donation information. The shelter’s chairperson, Jo Swart, expressed gratitude for Janse van Rensburg’s efforts, saying, ‘Thank you, Francois, for taking on this incredibly daring feat of walking so far on behalf of others; for making a point of doing something to raise much-needed funds and awareness.’
