Limpopo Husband Arrested for Fatal Shooting of Correctional Officer Wife

A 38-year-old man is expected to appear in the Modimolle District Court on Thursday after allegedly shooting and killing his wife, a Correctional Services officer, in what police suspect could be a domestic violence-related incident.

According to the South African Police Service in Limpopo, the woman was attacked on Tuesday morning while walking to work near the Modimolle Correctional Centre. Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the victim, also aged 38, was walking from her rented accommodation to her workplace along Nelson Mandela Road at about 6am when she was allegedly confronted by her husband.

Domestic Violence-Related Dispute

Authorities said the suspect later handed himself over to Nebo Police on Tuesday evening, hours after the fatal shooting. The Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit has since taken over the investigation and confiscated a licensed firearm believed to have been used in the killing.

While investigators are still working to establish the exact motive, police said “domestic violence related dispute cannot be ruled out”. Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the incident and urged families facing relationship difficulties to seek assistance before conflicts escalate into violence.

Seeking Help

Hadebe called on “families and couples who are experiencing domestic challenges to seek professional help to resolve them amicably”. For those experiencing domestic violence, the Department of Social Development provides resources and support. Additionally, the National Institute of Crime Prevention offers guidance on obtaining a protection order.

Some steps to obtain a protection order include:

  • Filing an affidavit at a police station
  • Securing an interim order
  • Attending a court hearing

The identity of the slain officer has not been released as investigations continue. Police said the suspect will face a charge of murder, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain ongoing.
