A new off-leash dog park has opened in Mowbray, Cape Town, providing a safe space for dog owners to let their pets run free. The Sawkins Road Dog Park is a joint initiative between the City of Cape Town and the Little Mowbray Rosebank Improvement District (LMRID). The park features trees donated by residents, play apparatus for dogs, and will be maintained by the City’s Recreation and Parks Department.
Transforming a Neglected Space
The area was previously an abandoned space plagued by anti-social behaviour and illegal dumping. However, through the efforts of the community and the city, it has been transformed into a unique off-leash dog park. Subcouncil 16 chairperson, Matthew Kempthorne, said the community has worked together to create a space that benefits all residents and visitors to the area.
According to the City of Cape Town, the park will provide a much-needed space for dog owners to socialise and exercise their pets. LMRID director of safety and security, Dave Sivertson, said the park will feature play equipment, trees, and possibly even hoops and platforms for dogs to play on.
Benefits for the Community
The new dog park is expected to have a positive impact on the community, providing a safe and enjoyable space for residents and visitors. Ward 57 councillor Yusuf Mohamed said the park will be a unique space for the area, where dog owners can let their pets off their leashes and socialise with other dog owners. Some of the benefits of the park include:
- A safe space for dog owners to exercise and socialise their pets
- An opportunity for the community to come together and socialise
- A unique space for residents and visitors to enjoy
The park is a great example of what can be achieved when the community and the city work together to create a positive and beneficial space. As the Cape Town community continues to grow and develop, it is important to create spaces that promote socialisation, exercise, and community engagement.
