31% of SA Single Moms Struggle: Why Motherhood Affects Them

This Mother’s Day, many single mothers in South Africa are facing the harsh realities of parenting alone, with 31% of them struggling to make ends meet, according to a report by the Statistics South Africa. For Jayde Jones, a 31-year-old hairstylist and single mother from Cape Town, the challenge is very real.

“Being a single mother of a 3-month-old and a 5-year-old is quite challenging,” she says. “Especially trying to figure out the newborn phase from scratch again and still trying to balance the attention for your firstborn so that they do not feel neglected.”

The Importance of a Support System

For many single mothers, the importance of a village cannot be overstated. Support systems, whether it is a parent, friend or family member, often make the difference between coping and completely burning out. For Jayde, her mom was a lifesaver, helping her with her eldest daughter for the first six weeks after she had a C-section.

After those first six weeks, Jayde had to step fully into doing it all herself. “And now that I am going back to work soon, I have to do practice runs, what time to leave, basically what a day would look like for me when I am working.”

Financial and Emotional Pressures

Single mothers especially carry an immense emotional and physical load while still showing up for their children every day. Financial pressures are also a major concern, with many single mothers struggling to make ends meet. According to a report by the South African Social Security Agency, the number of single mothers receiving financial assistance has increased by 25% in the past year.

For financial crime compliance specialist Shaneca Smal-Bergstedt, who lost both her parents at a young age, this Mother’s Day carries a deeply personal meaning as she reflects on her first journey into motherhood and everything it has reshaped within her.

  • Emotional adjustment: Single mothers often face a range of emotions, from joy and love to fear, doubt, and anxiety.
  • Financial pressures: The cost of raising a child can be overwhelming, with many single mothers struggling to make ends meet.
  • Support systems: Having a strong support system can make all the difference for single mothers, helping them to cope with the challenges of parenting alone.
