Napo, a small county on the China-Vietnam border, has put itself on the map with its first-ever bird-watching competition. The event, which took place on March 26, saw 14 teams and over 60 participants from across China spot and record as many species as possible. By the competition’s close, participants had recorded 259 valid species, including the endangered Mrs. Hume’s pheasant, a species under first-class state protection in China.
According to Mo Guowei from the Kunming Rosefinch Bird Research Institute, Napo has long been known for its ethnic culture and star anise, but it’s now gaining recognition as a bird haven. The county’s reputation as a bird-watching destination did not emerge overnight, with decades of ecological conservation and efforts to strengthen forest protection, crack down on illegal hunting, and restore habitats.

Photographer Lin Xiuwen has spent nine years documenting the region’s avian life and has photographed more than 280 bird species, including over 20 first records for Guangxi. His persistence has produced a valuable grassroots database and attracted birders from across the country.
