A wave of gang-related violence has swept through Cape Town, leaving one person dead and three injured in separate shootings. The latest incident occurred in Kalksteenfontein, where an alleged Fancy Boys gang leader, known as Pang, was shot dead in his vehicle on Jakkelsvlei Avenue.
According to South African Police Service, a 36-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded, while a 30-year-old male was injured in the same incident. The motive for the attack is still under investigation, and the suspects are yet to be arrested.
Gang Violence on the Rise
The community of Lotus River was also affected by gang violence, with a scholar transport driver being shot in the neck outside De Duine Primary School during pick-up time on Wednesday afternoon. The Western Cape Education Department confirmed that the incident occurred while learners were being dismissed, and a murder and attempted murder cases were opened for investigation.
In another incident, a drive-by shooting on Duinefontein Road in Manenberg claimed the life of a 39-year-old man, while his girlfriend was shot in the chest. The incident occurred at around 6am, when unidentified gunmen opened fire at a group of people waiting for a taxi.
Community Fears Retaliation
The recent surge in gang violence has left the community fearful of retaliation and further attacks. Residents are calling for increased police presence and action to be taken against gang leaders. The City of Cape Town has implemented various initiatives to combat gang violence, including the establishment of a Gang Unit to focus on gang-related crime.
