Suspended Brigadier Mbangwa Nkhwashu has testified at the Madlanga Commission, denying any close ties to murder-accused Katiso “KT” Molefe, despite admitting to delivering goods to him in prison. Nkhwashu claimed he was acting on a request from Fundiswa Nyangule, Molefe’s wife, who he described as his “baby sister”.
According to Nkhwashu, he followed the proper procedure when he arrived at the Groenpunt Correctional Services, identifying himself to officials and explaining the purpose of his visit. However, correctional officials later flagged the visit to investigators, raising concerns about Nkhwashu’s conduct.
Investigation into Armand Swart’s Murder
The case centers on the killing of 30-year-old engineer Armand Swart, who was shot 23 times while sitting in his car outside his workplace in Vereeniging on April 17, 2024. Investigators believe Swart was killed in a case of mistaken identity, allegedly targeted instead of a colleague who had exposed a major corruption scheme involving inflated Transnet contracts.
Molefe is accused of ordering the hit, while SAPS detective Michael Pule Tau is alleged to have coordinated the killing. Lucky Molefe, Katiso’s nephew, is believed to have provided key information linked to the plot and is currently on the run, with a warrant issued for his arrest.
Allegations of Interference
Nkhwashu has denied interfering in the investigation into Swart’s murder, stating that he would never put his 39-year career at risk for a man he had just met. However, the issue has intensified scrutiny over his relationship with Molefe, with some raising questions about the nature of their connection.
Adding to the tension, Molefe has denied any family link to Nkhwashu, which the brigadier has rejected, saying it was not possible. The Madlanga Commission will continue to investigate the matter, with Nkhwashu’s testimony providing further insight into the complex web of relationships and events surrounding the Armand Swart murder case.
