The Western Cape has been severely impacted by recent floods, with over 100,000 residents requiring urgent humanitarian assistance. Humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers has expanded its relief efforts to assist those affected, with spokesperson Ali Sablay stating that their response has grown to meet the needs of the community.
According to Sablay, Gift of the Givers teams have distributed more than 150,000 hot meals, along with blankets, hygiene packs, mattresses, and baby care supplies to flood-affected residents across the Western Cape. The organisation has also deployed teams to outlying regions, including the Breede Valley, Cape Winelands District, Cape Agulhas Municipality, and Langeberg Municipality.
Relief Efforts
The Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) has partnered with Gift of the Givers to support local communities, with CEO Corrie van Zyl urging the public to donate essential items to help those in need. Van Zyl said that the WPCA has felt the effects of the recent storms, but it has not been as traumatic as it has been for many communities across the Western Cape.
Gift of the Givers is in need of donations, which can be delivered to the Newlands Cricket Stadium drop-off centre. The public is encouraged to donate essential items, including blankets, linen, towels, and face cloths, non-perishable food items, 5L bottled water, hygiene packs, soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes, roll-on deodorant and body lotion, toilet paper, sanitary pads, and diapers.
Donation Guidelines
It is essential to note that Gift of the Givers only accepts new items, as second-hand clothing can lead to donation spots becoming dumping grounds. The organisation has specified the items that are needed, which include:
- Blankets
- Linen
- Towels and face cloths
- Non-perishable food items
- 5L bottled water
- Hygiene packs
- Soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes
- Roll-on deodorant and body lotion
- Toilet paper
