The Vasco da Gama Yacht Race from Durban to East London has concluded with a nail-biting finish, as just two seconds separated the first two yachts to cross the finish line. Regardless 2, skippered by Peter Blofield, took line honours ahead of Nigel Milln’s CFM, in what organisers described as one of the closest finishes in the race’s history.

Barry Boorman, commodore of the Royal Natal Yacht Club, which organises the event, described it as a duel between two of the fleet’s fiercest rivals. The race was filled with drama from start to finish, with Free Spirit, skippered by Neville Bransby, encountering rudder problems at about 3am on Monday morning and losing steerage.
According to the Vasco da Gama route, the race covers a distance of approximately 300 nautical miles. The National Sea Rescue Institute launched from Shelly Beach and assisted Free Spirit back to KwaZulu-Natal.
Yacht Race Drama
The race was not without its challenges, as a slow start on Sunday due to light winds affected the competitors. Despite this, the organisers were considering extending the official cut-off time to accommodate the delayed finishers. The Spirit of Anna Wardley was expected to arrive next, followed by Zephyr, Moondancer, and Moneypenny.
