Jaedon Naidu, the top-performing graduate from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), is set to pursue a Master’s degree in statistical science at the University of Oxford. Naidu graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science honours degree in statistics and is eager to take on new challenges.
According to Naidu, his interest in statistics stems from his childhood, where he competed in national and international mathematics, computer programming, and physics Olympiads. He believes that statistics is a natural bridge between theoretical learning and practical application, and he is excited to explore its applications in the real world.
From UKZN to Oxford
Naidu’s academic journey began at UKZN, where he was encouraged by Professor Delia North, the then dean and head of the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, to pursue data science. He initially accepted an offer to study medicine but later changed to the data science programme, which combines mathematics, statistics, and computer science.
Throughout his studies, Naidu gravitated towards modules that challenged his analytical abilities, such as Time Series Analysis, which focuses on understanding how quantities evolve over time. His honours research project, titled ‘Diagnosing Low Debt Collection Using Generalised Additive Models and Heckman Selection’, offered a comprehensive solution to address low debt collection rates and introduced new theoretical techniques.
Applications of Statistical Science
Statistical science has numerous applications in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, including the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI). As noted on the Wikipedia page on Artificial Intelligence, AI development relies heavily on statistical techniques. Naidu believes that his background in statistics and mathematics will be increasingly valuable in this field.
Some of the key areas where statistical science is applied include:
- Data analysis and interpretation
- Predictive modeling
- Machine learning
- Decision-making under uncertainty
Naidu’s achievements can be attributed to his strong work ethic and dedication to his studies. He credited his parents, Dr Sean Naidu and Dr Anoshini Moodley, and his girlfriend, Alicia Khader, for their support throughout his academic journey.
