Pirates Coach Pleads For Calm Ahead Of Soweto Derby

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has sent a message to the supporters to not stress his players but give them the best support in the league title race. Pirates head into Sunday’s clash against Kaizer Chiefs at the summit of the Betway Premiership standings with 58 points, narrowly ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns, who sit one point behind with a game in hand.

Soweto Derby Pressure

With just five matches remaining, every moment carries weight. That context makes the derby more than just a battle for bragging rights. It is a fixture that could shape the destination of the title. Following Sundowns’ slip against Stellenbosch, Pirates have been handed a window to build momentum — but they will need to navigate both expectation and pressure, particularly in front of what is expected to be a packed FNB Stadium.

Ouaddou has seen both sides of that dynamic this season. “My message is just to thank them (fans), thank them first of all, since the beginning of this season. I know there is an important moment they are looking for. I just ask them to be behind us wherever we go in South Africa,” he said. For the Moroccan coach, the role of supporters extends beyond atmosphere — it directly influences performance. “Our fans are always with us, so we’re expecting the same during that game. And I know that the stadium will be packed and to be 100% with us because you know, for my players, when they feel the support, when they feel the love of our supporters, our fans, you know, they can feel it on the pitch, and they feel free to compete,” he added.

Impact Of Negativity

However, he was equally candid about the impact of negativity. “But on the other hand, when they feel pressure, and they, for example, they boo them, you know, we are human beings, you know, we have a brain, we have a mind, you know, they get stressed, so we definitely need them to reach our target.” Having finished as runners-up in each of the last three seasons, Pirates understand how fine the margins are in a title race — especially against a side as relentless as Sundowns. According to the Premier Soccer League rules, the team with the most points at the end of the season will be crowned the champion.

There is, however, a boost within the camp. For the first time this season, Ouaddou has a fully fit squad available. “It’s the first time that I have seen the physio room empty. So, it means that everybody is ready to play.” With belief, fitness and the title within reach, Pirates now turn to their supporters — knowing that in a season defined by pressure, unity could be the difference. Some key factors that could influence the outcome of the Soweto Derby include:

  • Team morale and cohesion
  • Strategic gameplay and tactics
  • Player fitness and availability
  • Support from the fans

As the South African Football Association continues to promote the development of the sport in the country, the Soweto Derby remains one of the most highly anticipated matches of the season.
