US skateboarder Jason Vanporppal has completed an epic 6,400km journey from Kampala, Uganda, to Cape Town, South Africa, to raise funds for the construction of the biggest skatepark in Uganda.
Vanporppal’s great trek began in February and has taken him through Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana, before finally arriving in Cape Town on Africa Day.
Embracing South African Culture
During his travels through South Africa, Vanporppal has passed through several towns and cities, including Johannesburg, Kroonstad, Bloemfontein, Beaufort West, Richmond, and Laingsburg, where he has been warmly received by locals and has even experienced his first traditional South African braai.
Vanporppal’s inspiration for the cross-continent skateboarding journey came from his friendships with Ugandan skaters Isaac and Ephraim, who shared with him the lack of resources and facilities for young skaters in Uganda, forcing them to practice on dirt roads and in public spaces where they are often chased away due to noise.
Building a Skatepark for Africa
Vanporppal aims to build a state-of-the-art skatepark in Uganda, not just for the local skaters but for the entire African skate community, and has already raised over $30,000 of his $35,000 GoFundMe target.
According to the Wikipedia page on skateparks, the construction of such facilities can have a significant impact on the development of young people, promoting physical activity, social interaction, and community engagement.
Vanporppal’s journey has been documented on his social media accounts, where he has shared his appreciation for the support he has received from South Africans, with his Facebook account boasting over 200,000 followers.
Some of the key milestones of Vanporppal’s journey include:

- Raising over $30,000 for the construction of the skatepark
