SA Hosts SADC Ministers Amid 2026 G20 Exclusion

South Africa is set to host a special meeting of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Foreign Ministers from May 22 to 24, 2026, at Skukuza in the Kruger National Park. The meeting, chaired by Minister Ronald Lamola, comes amid a diplomatic dispute with the United States, which has formally barred Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana from attending a G20 finance summit in Washington.

SADC Unity Against US Bullying

The US has been accused of crossing a diplomatic line by blocking South Africa’s Finance Minister from attending the G20 finance summit, an act of aggression that has left the region with no choice but to rally together against Washington’s bullying. According to the South African Government, the exclusion is a breach of the G20’s rules, as South Africa is a member of the G20.

Political analyst and Principal Consultant at Centre for Strategic Leadership Sandile Swana said: “These lies are a deliberate pretext.” The US previously boycotted the G20 leaders summit held in Johannesburg in November 2025, and has now used its administrative control over accreditation to silence South Africa’s voice entirely.

Impact on SA and the Region

The meeting of SADC Foreign Ministers provides an opportunity for the bloc to stand up to the bullying of the United States and to reflect on the prevailing geopolitical environment and its impact on the region. The exclusion of South Africa from the G20 finance summit has been described as a punishment, rather than a holiday, and has sparked concerns about the impact on the country’s economy and its relationships with other nations.

Some of the key issues that are likely to be discussed at the meeting include:

  • The impact of the US exclusion on SA’s economy and trade relationships
  • The need for SADC unity in the face of external aggression
  • The importance of promoting regional cooperation and development

As noted by the Southern African Development Community, the meeting will provide a platform for the region to come together and address the challenges it faces, including the impact of the US exclusion on SA and the region.
