Jacob Zuma, the leader of the Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), has called for the postponement of the local government elections until his party’s dispute with the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) is finalised. Addressing the party’s eThekwini consultative forum on Sunday, Zuma questioned the IEC’s rationale in preparing for another election while his party was still challenging the legitimacy of the 2024 elections.
IEC Dispute
The MKP has been challenging the results of the 2024 general election, citing alleged rigging and technical glitches that saw the party’s results disappear from the national results dashboard for two hours. Zuma told the meeting that he has met with the party’s legal team and is preparing for the sitting of the case, which is expected to be heard early next month by the Electoral Court.
According to the South African Government website, the IEC has already indicated that this year’s local government elections will take place between November and January 2027. However, Zuma argued that the party cannot participate in new elections until the dispute over the previous election is resolved. “We were robbed in the previous elections. We might call for the postponement of the upcoming elections. You can’t organise another election while you have not resolved the previous one,” he said.
Party’s Demands
Zuma called on his party members to demand that the IEC resolve the dispute before proceeding with new elections. He also urged the party to double down and win the eThekwini municipality at this year’s elections and eventually the province by 2029. In the 2024 national and general elections, the MKP received 400,000 votes in eThekwini, becoming the largest party and ending the ANC’s historical dominance.
Here are some key points to consider:
- The MKP is challenging the results of the 2024 general election, citing alleged rigging and technical glitches.
- The party is considering postponing the local government elections until the dispute is finalised.
- The IEC has indicated that the local government elections will take place between November and January 2027.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the IEC will respond to the MKP’s demands. For more information on the Electoral Commission of South Africa, visit the IEC website.
