A suspected rhino poaching kingpin, Joseph ‘Big Joe’ Nyalungu, was shot dead in Mkhuhlu, Mpumalanga, on May 16, just a week after surviving another shooting on May 8. The 62-year-old was killed when two men jumped out of a white bakkie and stormed his business premises, firing multiple shots at him before fleeing the scene.

Rhino Poaching in South Africa

According to the South African Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, rhino poaching remains a significant threat to the country’s conservation efforts. Nyalungu had been in the news over the years following arrests linked to rhino poaching, and was facing several rhino poaching-related charges in Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

His latest arrest took place in October 2024 at the same premises, after police allegedly found explosives and ammunition in the yard during a search warrant operation. He was released on R20,000 bail by the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court, and the matter was still ongoing at the time of his death.
