Two teenagers, aged 18 and 15, have appeared in the Randfontein Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and kidnapping following the deaths of a 21-year-old and a 16-year-old in the Dumping Site informal settlement in Randfontein.
The incident, which occurred on February 24, allegedly involved gang violence and the use of sticks to assault the victims. The 21-year-old died at the scene, while the 16-year-old was thrown into a mine shaft after attempting to escape.
Murder and Kidnapping Charges
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has stated that it remains committed to ensuring justice is served and that those responsible for violent crimes are held accountable before the courts. According to the NPA’s spokesperson, Magaboke Mohlatlole, the matter was postponed to April 13 to allow the accused to obtain legal representation and for a date to be set for a bail application.
The accused were arrested after their parents handed them over to the police on March 20. The court will reconvene to set bail and continue proceedings, with authorities emphasising the seriousness of violent crimes in the community. As stated on the South African Government website, the country has implemented various initiatives to combat crime and violence.
