The year was 1977, and the forced relocation of families from Riverside, Durban North, to Newlands, and eventually to Stonebridge, Phoenix, due to the notorious Group Areas Act, had just begun. Little did anyone know that this move would be the catalyst for the formation of the Phoenix Football Association (PFA) in 1978, a legacy that would bring unity and sport to the community.

As the story goes, the author’s family had just moved into a council house in Stonebridge, opposite the recreational fields where a group of sports enthusiasts were playing. The author was approached by an official to help with an electricity connection for their 5-a-side tournament and later became the MC for the event. This small act of kindness led to the ultimate formation of the PFA, which would become a beacon of hope and unity for the community.

History of the Phoenix Football Association

The PFA’s first annual general meeting was held at the White House Hotel, where Dan Manicom was elected as president, and the author as vice president. Other officials included George (RE) Naidoo, Junior Reddy, Sydney Cooposamy, Jason Perumal, and Bala Govender. Over the years, the PFA has had many dedicated officials who have worked tirelessly to provide a healthy outlet for the people of Phoenix.

When the PFA celebrated its 10th anniversary in 1987, it produced a souvenir brochure that included messages from soccer stalwarts such as Rama Reddy, AK Sayed, and Ashwin Trikamjee. The PFA has also had the support of sponsors, including FIFA, which has helped to promote the sport in the community.

Impact of the Phoenix Football Association

The PFA has had a significant impact on the community, providing a platform for young people to develop their skills and showcase their talent. The association has also helped to promote unity and social cohesion in the area, bringing people together through the love of sport. As the South African Football Association notes, football has the power to unite people and transcend social and economic boundaries.

Some of the key achievements of the PFA include:

  • Providing a platform for young people to develop their skills and showcase their talent
  • Promoting unity and social cohesion in the community
  • Supporting the development of football in the area

As the PFA continues to grow and develop, it is clear that its legacy will live on for many years to come. The association’s commitment to promoting unity and sport in the community is a testament to the power of football to bring people together and make a positive impact on society.
