The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced its departure from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), effective May 1. According to the Minister of Energy, Suhail Al Mazrouei, the UAE’s exit will not affect the integrity of OPEC’s operations, particularly in regards to the pricing of oil as determined by the Platt’s mechanism.
OPEC has experienced the departure of several member countries in the past. Between 1992 and 2024, four countries have withdrawn from the organization, including Ecuador, Gabon, Indonesia, and Qatar. The Platt’s mechanism, which determines the price of a barrel of oil, will continue to be used, and the UAE’s exit will not disrupt the global supply of oil.
