Despite the efforts of Premier Thami Ntuli and the establishment of the Premier’s Msunduzi Working Group, the Msunduzi Municipality in Pietermaritzburg continues to struggle with severe service delivery issues. Residents are forced to confront unsightly sewage problems daily, with parts of the city’s central business district remaining filthy.
An eyesore sight on a lane connecting Church and Pietermaritz streets behind the Home Affairs building is evidence of the municipality’s decaying infrastructure. Traffic congestion is still a huge problem in Pietermaritz Street, as taxis ranking at the Imbali Taxi Rank are left parked in the middle of the street. Filth is still visible, especially in the area lying between Boshoff and East streets.
Service Delivery Challenges
The Msunduzi Association of Residents and Ratepayers (MARR) Chief Executive Officer, Anthony Waldhausen, said that since the Premier’s Msunduzi Working Group was established in February 2025, nothing has changed the condition of the CBD and surrounding settlements. Residents continue to experience increasing water and electricity challenges, with the Snathing area in the Greater Edendale region being without water for years and relying on inconsistent tanker deliveries.
According to the South African Government website, the Premier’s Msunduzi Working Group was established to assist the struggling municipality in turning around its collapsing infrastructure and service delivery. However, Waldhausen stated that the group has not provided any updates on their progress, making it difficult for residents to understand what is being done to address the issues.
Impact on Residents
The service delivery challenges have had a significant impact on residents, with three schools in the area being forced to cut short their hours of learning and teaching due to the lack of water and sanitation. The schools have also stopped their school nutrition programme, affecting the health and well-being of the children.
Some of the key issues affecting residents include:
- Unsightly sewage problems and filthy streets
- Traffic congestion due to poorly managed taxi ranks
- Inconsistent water and electricity supply
- Lack of effective waste management
As the situation continues to deteriorate, residents are calling for urgent action to be taken to address the service delivery challenges. With the lack of progress from the Premier’s Msunduzi Working Group, it remains to be seen whether the municipality will be able to turn around its collapsing infrastructure and provide residents with the basic services they deserve.
