A Dutch national has been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg after being found in possession of a large amount of Khat during an intelligence-driven operation conducted this week, said the South African Police Service (SAPS). The suspect was en route from South Africa to Frankfurt, Germany, when he was intercepted before departure.
During a search of his luggage, officers discovered more than 40 kilograms of Khat, with an estimated street value of approximately R240,000. According to Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, the drugs have an estimated street value of R240,000.
Combating Transnational Organised Crime
The suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges relating to drug trafficking. The arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to combat transnational organised crime through intelligence-led operations at ports of entry.
As noted on the South African Police Service website, police have been working to intensify border control measures. Over the past two years, police have intercepted and arrested more than 50 drug mules at OR Tambo International Airport.
