Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Extended 45 Days

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 45-day extension of a ceasefire that US President Donald Trump declared on 16 April, the US State Department said on Friday. The move aims to enable further progress in the negotiations between the two countries.

Background to the Conflict

The conflict between Israel and Lebanon has been ongoing since 2 March, when Hezbollah fired missiles at Israel, three days into the US-Iran war. Israel responded with air attacks on Lebanon, and later widened its ground invasion into southern Lebanon.

The US State Department cast the recent Israel-Lebanon talks, held in Washington on Thursday and Friday, as “highly productive”. The countries will reconvene negotiations on 2 June and 3 June, according to State Department spokesman Tommy Piggott.

Key Issues at Stake

The extension of the ceasefire is crucial in preventing further escalation of the conflict. Some of the key issues that need to be addressed in the negotiations include:

  • The withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon
  • The disarmament of Hezbollah
  • The establishment of a buffer zone along the Israel-Lebanon border

According to the US State Department, the negotiations are an important step towards achieving a lasting peace in the region. The international community, including the United Nations, has been calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The impact of the conflict on the region has been significant, with many civilians displaced and injured. The extension of the ceasefire is a welcome development, and it is hoped that the negotiations will lead to a permanent resolution to the conflict.
