The KZN Provincial Treasury has warned that the financial situation in the municipalities is unsustainable and poses a significant risk to the province’s economic stability. The treasury has called for immediate action to address the issue, including the implementation of stricter financial controls and the introduction of consequences for officials found guilty of financial misconduct.
Causes of Financial Mismanagement
According to the KZN Provincial Treasury, the causes of financial mismanagement in the municipalities include a lack of effective leadership, inadequate financial management systems, and a culture of corruption and impunity.
