A 59-year-old businessman from Gauteng has been feared dead after human remains were found inside a crocodile in the Komati River, near Komatipoort in Mpumalanga. The discovery was made on Saturday by a joint team consisting of the SA Police Service Search and Rescue Unit, NatJoints, SANParks, Emergency Medical Services, Securecon, and the local port management committee.
The team had been searching for the man for about a week after his Ford Ranger was found trapped at a low-lying bridge in the river. According to police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo, a crocodile was later identified during the search and was believed to have been involved in the incident. Masondo stated that the necessary permission was obtained to euthanize the crocodile, and it was then that the human remains were found and retrieved.
Crocodile Attack in SA
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of people living and working near crocodile-infested areas. According to the South African National Parks website, crocodiles are found in many of the country’s national parks and game reserves, and can be a threat to human life. The website provides information on how to avoid crocodile attacks and what to do in the event of an encounter.
Acting Mpumalanga police commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi praised the team for their efforts in finding the missing person. “I give honour to the dedicated team that has put their lives in danger to find the missing person. I know it was not easy, but they did not give up, even when they were faced with dangerous situations,” said Mkhwanazi.
Investigation Ongoing
DNA tests will be conducted to determine whether the remains are those of the missing businessman. The incident is a reminder of the importance of being aware of one’s surroundings and taking necessary precautions when living or working in areas where wild animals are present.
