The City of Cape Town has given the green light to plans for affordable housing and mixed-use development of a municipal parking lot at the Civic Centre in the CBD. The site, located within Cape Town’s CBD Foreshore precinct, next to the City’s Civic Centre complex, and close to major public transport infrastructure, is set to be redeveloped to address the city’s housing shortage.
According to Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, the development should offer mixed-use opportunities, including shops, offices, parking, and affordable housing units. The City aims to unlock over 12 000 affordable housing units through this project and other land releases. As Hill-Lewis stated, “This is how we are making under-used public assets work for Capetonians with a broader land release pipeline of over 12 000 affordable housing units.”
