Cape Town Affordable Housing Boost: 12 000 Units Planned

The City of Cape Town has given the green light to plans for affordable housing and mixed-use development of a municipal parking lot at the Civic Centre in the CBD. The site, located within Cape Town’s CBD Foreshore precinct, next to the City’s Civic Centre complex, and close to major public transport infrastructure, is set to be redeveloped to address the city’s housing shortage.

According to Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, the development should offer mixed-use opportunities, including shops, offices, parking, and affordable housing units. The City aims to unlock over 12 000 affordable housing units through this project and other land releases. As Hill-Lewis stated, “This is how we are making under-used public assets work for Capetonians with a broader land release pipeline of over 12 000 affordable housing units.”

Affordable Housing in Cape Town

The need for affordable housing in Cape Town is pressing. As the city continues to grow, the demand for housing, especially for low-income families, has increased. The City’s plans to redevelop the parking lot at the Civic Centre are part of a larger effort to address this issue. The City of Cape Town’s website provides more information on the city’s housing initiatives.

Benefits of the Redevelopment

The redevelopment of the parking lot is expected to deliver long-term benefits, including:

  • Increased availability of affordable housing units
  • Mixed-use development opportunities
  • Improved public transport infrastructure
  • Enhanced quality of life for residents

The report will be submitted to Council for consideration on May 27. Subject to Council approval, the City will start a formal public participation process, during which residents, stakeholders, and interested parties will be invited to submit comments on the proposed redevelopment.
