3 Zimbabweans Get Life for Child Trafficking in SA

A Gauteng High Court has sentenced three Zimbabwean nationals to life imprisonment for their roles in a human trafficking scheme involving vulnerable children. The trio was found guilty of multiple criminal counts, including human trafficking, fraud, possession of fraudulent documents, and contravention of the Immigration Act.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole, the sentence is a strong affirmation of South Africa’s commitment to combating human trafficking and protecting vulnerable children from exploitation. The accused were arrested in a staggered fashion after the first arrest was made at OR Tambo International Airport on August 1, 2022, following the interception of Hilda Tenenga, who was found attempting to travel with four minor children using fraudulent travel documentation.

Human Trafficking in South Africa

Human trafficking is a serious crime in South Africa, and the country has implemented various measures to combat it. The South African government has established a number of initiatives to prevent human trafficking, including the National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking. The plan aims to prevent human trafficking, protect victims, and prosecute perpetrators.

The NPA welcomes the sentence as a bold stand against child exploitation. During sentencing proceedings, Senior State Advocate Makwena Mokwatedi submitted that the accused had exploited the extreme vulnerability of the minor children, who were orphans, and had abused their status as foreign nationals residing in South Africa.

Penalties for Human Trafficking

The court sentenced each of the accused to four terms of life imprisonment for trafficking in persons. In addition, each accused received 12 years’ imprisonment for fraud, 15 years’ imprisonment for possession of fraudulent documents, and two years’ imprisonment for contravening the Immigration Act. Acting Judge Bokako ordered that the sentences run concurrently with the life sentences for each accused.

Some of the key factors that contribute to human trafficking in South Africa include:

  • Poverty and unemployment
  • Lack of education and awareness
  • Corruption and weak law enforcement
  • Porosity of borders

The sentence is a significant step towards combating human trafficking in South Africa. As noted by the United Nations, human trafficking is a global problem that requires a coordinated effort to prevent.
