DA Parliamentary Leader: 3 Candidates Emerge

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is set to elect a new Parliamentary leader following the closure of nominations, with three candidates emerging as frontrunners: Kevin Mileham, Andrew Whitfield, and George Michalakis. This comes after Geordin Hill-Lewis was elected as the Federal Leader during the recent congress, outlining his leadership strategy, which includes Minister Leon Schreiber and strategist Ryan Coetzee leading the party’s Cabinet members.

According to DA national spokesperson Jan de Villiers, the party’s federal constitution states that if the elected leader of the party, Hill-Lewis, does not sit in the national caucus, then the caucus needs to elect its own parliamentary leader. De Villiers explained that the nomination process has closed, and the members of the caucus will now know who the nominated people are.

DA Parliamentary Leader Role

The DA Parliamentary leader will play a crucial role in organizing the party’s positions on certain legislative votes or appointments, as explained by University of South Africa’s Professor Dirk Kotzé. Kotzé noted that while it is an important position, the DA’s structure means that the Parliamentary leader will still share responsibilities with the chief whip, currently George Michalakis.

DA Member of Parliament, Lisa Schickerling, said that all three candidates bring strong experience and credibility to the race. One source shared that the two most favoured are Whitfield and Michalakis, with Michalakis being regarded as quite effective as the chief whip.

Candidates’ Profiles

The three candidates have unique profiles: Kevin Mileham, Andrew Whitfield, and George Michalakis. Whitfield is a former deputy minister of Trade and Industry, while Michalakis is the current Chief Whip. Mileham has been actively canvassing caucus members, along with Whitfield and Michalakis.

As the DA prepares for the election, the party’s structure and the role of the Parliamentary leader will be crucial in determining the outcome. According to the South African Parliament website, the Parliamentary leader will be responsible for leading the party’s caucus and coordinating its activities in the National Assembly.

The election of the DA Parliamentary leader is expected to take place soon, with the outcome having significant implications for the party’s future. As noted by Kotzé, the Parliamentary leader will play a key role in shaping the party’s positions on important legislative issues, and will work closely with the chief whip to achieve the party’s goals.
