Merebank Granny Murder: Suspect Escapes Police Custody

A shocking turn of events has unfolded in the case of the Merebank grandmother who was strangled with a tie during a robbery at her home in Satara Road on March 30. The 54-year-old suspect, who was arrested on April 3, has escaped from Wentworth Hospital while under police guard by the local SAPS. The suspect was linked to the murder of 82-year-old Indrawathy Rampersadh through a photograph taken from video footage, which allegedly showed her leaving the house shortly after the murder.

According to PT Alarms spokesperson Dhevan Govindasamy, the woman had allegedly tried to commit suicide when she was rushed to Wentworth Hospital on the night of April 3. She was placed under police guard at the hospital and was in leg shackles. However, she managed to escape by climbing onto a chair in the bathroom and escaping through the window.

Escape Raises Concerns

The escape of the suspect has raised concerns about the safety of other elderly residents in the area, who may be targeted by the suspect. Govindasamy expressed disappointment and concern that the suspect was able to escape, despite being under police guard. He also questioned the circumstances surrounding the escape and whether there would be any disciplinary action taken against the police officer who was guarding the woman.

A reward has been offered for information leading to the suspect’s whereabouts. The South African Police Service has been criticized for its handling of the case, and the escape of the suspect has added to the concerns about the effectiveness of the police in keeping communities safe.

Investigation and Consequences

The investigation into the escape is ongoing, and it is unclear what consequences the police officer who was guarding the suspect will face. The incident has sparked outrage and calls for greater accountability within the police service. Rampersadh’s son, Kishan Bridgelal, who is the principal of Merebank Secondary School, said he felt as if his mother’s death was in vain after finding out about the suspect’s escape.

Some of the key issues that need to be addressed in this case include:

  • The failure of the police to prevent the suspect’s escape
  • The lack of accountability within the police service
  • The need for greater security measures to protect elderly residents

The case highlights the need for greater vigilance and accountability within the police service, and the importance of ensuring that suspects are held accountable for their crimes.
