Nine police officers from the Bultfontein Public Order Policing Unit in the Free State have been granted bail after being charged with four counts of murder. The officers, who include Sergeants Edward Mokake, Shadrack Kabuza, and Tseliso Mohoboko, as well as Constables Johannes Mohau, David Mofothi, Lebohang Senxesi, Ikaneng Maropeng, Teboho Monaune, and Lehlohonolo Morapedi, appeared in the Bultfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), the incident occurred on September 22, 2024, in the Phahameng township, where police responded to a call about a domestic dispute. The situation escalated, resulting in the deaths of three civilians – Mmota Maleka, 36, Lobisa Maleka, 28, and Andries Maleka, 30 – as well as a police officer, Constable Mojalefa Borole, 30.
Investigation Reveals Gunshot Injuries
The investigation by Ipid revealed that all four deceased individuals died from gunshot injuries. A total of 43 empty cartridge cases were collected from the crime scene. The police officers allegedly executed a tactical entry into the house, discharging their firearms in the process.
Charges and Bail
The nine police officers were arrested on April 11, 2026, and charged with four counts of murder. Each officer was granted bail of R3,000 and released. The matter has been postponed until May 26, 2026, to allow the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to decide on the forum for the trial.
The incident has raised concerns about the use of force by police in South Africa. According to the South African Government website, the police service is committed to upholding the law and protecting citizens, while also respecting human rights.
