A 16-year-old Grade 9 pupil was fatally stabbed by a fellow learner at Badirile Secondary School in Khutsong, Carletonville, on Thursday. The incident occurred during an altercation between two learners on the school premises, according to the Gauteng Department of Education.

The department said preliminary reports indicate that a 17-year-old Grade 10 learner allegedly stabbed the 16-year-old boy, leaving him critically injured. He later died at a medical facility while receiving treatment.

Condolences and Condemnation

Gauteng MEC for Education Matome Chiloane said the department was deeply saddened by the boy’s death. “We are devastated by this tragic loss of life and extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased learner and the Badirile Secondary School community,” Chiloane said.

Chiloane also condemned violence among learners and called for greater cooperation between schools and families. “We strongly discourage any acts of violence among learners, as such actions have irreversible consequences. We urgently call upon parents and guardians to assist us in instilling discipline in our children at home, as it takes a collaborative effort to ensure our learners behave appropriately and remain safe,” he said.

Disciplinary Action and Investigation

The department said the school has begun disciplinary processes against the alleged perpetrator, while police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Gauteng Department of Education has deployed its Psychosocial Support Unit to the school to assist learners and educators affected by the tragedy.

Counselling and support services are expected to begin on Friday. The incident has raised concerns about school safety and procedural compliance, with some calling for increased security measures to be implemented.

Some of the measures that can be taken to prevent such incidents include:

  • Increasing security personnel on school premises
  • Implementing conflict resolution programs for learners
  • Providing counselling services to learners and educators
  • Encouraging parental involvement in school activities

The Gauteng Department of Education has urged learners, parents, and educators to work together to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
