The Sivananda World Peace Foundation hosted the launch of Yoga Mahotsav 2026, commemorating the 12th International Day of Yoga, at the Rajput Hall in Chatsworth. This event marked the beginning of a week-long celebration, culminating in the official International Day of Yoga on Sunday, June 21, at the Durban Amphitheatre.

The International Day of Yoga, as declared by the United Nations, aims to raise awareness about the benefits of yoga and promote a healthier lifestyle. The Sivananda World Peace Foundation, in partnership with local organizations, has been instrumental in promoting yoga and its benefits in South Africa.

Yoga and Its Benefits

Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual practice that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. It has been proven to have numerous benefits, including reducing stress and anxiety, improving flexibility and balance, and enhancing overall well-being. With the increasing demand for alternative forms of exercise and stress relief, yoga has become a popular choice among South Africans.
