Human Rights Watch has accused Israel of “unlawfully” using white phosphorus over residential areas of a southern Lebanese town, sparking widespread concern and outrage. The New York-based rights group reported that the Israeli military used artillery-fired white phosphorus munitions over homes in the town of Yohmor on March 3, 2026, causing fires and damage to at least two homes and one car.
The use of white phosphorus, a substance that ignites on contact with oxygen, has been widely criticized due to its potential to cause horrific burns, respiratory damage, organ failure, and death. According to the Human Rights Watch report, the Israeli military’s actions are in clear violation of international humanitarian law.
White Phosphorus: A Highly Controversial Weapon
White phosphorus can be used to create smokescreens and to illuminate battlefields, but its use as an incendiary weapon is highly controversial. The substance can cause widespread damage and harm to civilians, and its use in residential areas is particularly alarming. Ramzi Kaiss, Lebanon researcher at Human Rights Watch, stated that “the Israeli military’s unlawful use of white phosphorus over residential areas is extremely alarming and will have dire consequences for civilians”.
Consequences of the Conflict
The conflict between Israel and Lebanon has resulted in significant human suffering, with at least 394 people killed and over half a million people displaced. The Lebanese authorities have accused Israel of using white phosphorus rounds in attacks that have harmed civilians and the environment. In February, Lebanon accused Israel of spraying the herbicide glyphosate on the Lebanese side of their shared border, which President Joseph Aoun described as a “crime against the environment”.
The situation is further complicated by the involvement of other countries, including the United States, which has been providing military assistance to Israel. The United Nations has called for an immediate ceasefire and for all parties to respect international humanitarian law.
- At least 394 people have been killed in Israeli attacks
- Over half a million people have been displaced
- Lebanon has accused Israel of using white phosphorus rounds and herbicides
The international community must take immediate action to address the situation and prevent further harm to civilians. The use of white phosphorus and other controversial weapons must be condemned, and those responsible must be held accountable.
